Gas drainage
Typically “gas drainage” is used in the mining industry to describe the process of extracting gas from longwall coalmines.
Methane gas is the most common gas found in the underground coal seams. It must be extracted both before longwall mining starts and during the longwall mining process. Once the gas is extracted, it can there be managed in the following ways:
- Used for power generation (reciprocating gas engines or gas turbines),
- Gas flaring,
- Vented, or
- Compressed and sold into a gas pipeline.

Today, gas drainage engineers are familiar with three drainage methods:
- UIS – Underground to inseam pre-drainage,
- SIS – Surface to inseam pre-drainage, and
- Post Drainage – Using surface goaf wells or underground cross measure drill holes.
Once the holes have been drilled, Energen Solutions has the ability, capability, and experience to manage the remaining work as a “turnkey” project. This includes:
- Well head equipment design, supply, and installation.
- Gathering system and over land piping design, supply, and installation.
- Gas drainage plant (liquid ring pumps or gas positive displacement blowers) design, supply, and installation.
- Gas power generation design, supply, and installation.
- Gas flaring design, supply, and installation.
- Vent stacks design, supply, and installation.
With many years experience in the coal mining industry, the Energen Solutions team understands the requirements for the removal of the gas from the coalmines coal seams.
The team has the answers and is able to provide a “turnkey solution” for any underground coalmine with gas issues that need to be dealt with. The benefits of using a single contractor for a “turnkey solution” include:
- Risk assessments and HAZOPs are easier to manage with a single contract with Energen Solutions.
- Reduction in project overheads from a single project management.
- Having a single contract with Energen Solutions means that Energen Solutions manages the electrical, mechanical, and civil controls interfaces to your existing infrastructure.
- System design is to coordinated by a systems specialist:
- System design is separately managed, leaving you to manage a single contract.
- System design can leverage the experience of a single expert team.
- System design can be proven and applied successfully to future plant / expansion.
- Single Contract, single scope of works, leading to reduced risk and cost to you
